The 20th Shanghai International Film Festival (赌博app) is going to be held from June 17 to 26 this year. In the popular festival unit of Tribute to Masters, 赌博app will tip its hat to Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who was one of the “Four Masters of New German Cinema”. His six classic works including Love is Colder than Death, Fear Eats the Soul, Fontane Effi Briest, Chinese Roulette, World on a Wire and Veronika Voss will be shown to commemorate the 35th anniversary of his death and exhibit this leading figure’s artistic style.
Rainer Werner Fassbinder was born in Bavaria, southern Germany on May 31 of 1945, and lived in a lonely and uncared-for childhood during the worst decline and turmoil of Germany. The desolation and despair of the real world in that period started to take root in his heart. Loneliness and sensitiveness made Fassbinder susceptible even to the subtlest relationship between people
On June 10, 1982, Rainer Werner Fassbinder was found dead in the bed at his apartment, only a few days after his 37th birthday. The "heart of the New German Cinema Movement" stopped beating so unexpectedly that the whole world was shocked. Now, when the other three of the “Four Masters of New German Cinema” –Volker Schlondorf, Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders continue making films, Fassbinder was gone and left people with sighs, as well as his legacy works. During his short film career of 14 years, Fassbinder made 41 remarkable feature films at an amazing producing speed. As a drama writer, screenwriter and actor, he also produced more than 20 stage plays, radio plays and television series.
As Godard brought freshness to the New Wave of France, Fassbinder granted similar significance to the New German Cinema. He firmly believed that "film emancipates mind", and tried to criticize the boring and dull world perseveringly with his films in which his inner thoughts were exposed to the audience.
On the other hand, female roles were especially vivid in Fassbinder’s films, demonstrating various characters on the screen. In his late years, Fassbinder shot a number of feminist classic works, including Veronika Voss, which will also be shown at the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival. In this film, the artistic exploration of light and shadow, the reflection upon life and death from the angle of human nature have left deep impression in countless fans’ minds. The formerly popular film star Veronika Voss, considered to be the incarnation of Fassbinder himself, spoke out Fassbinder’ s attitude towards death through her lines of "Between instantaneous struggle and eternal death, I choose death".
In addition to Veronika Voss, Fassbinder’s classic productions including Love is Colder than Death, Fear Eats the Soul, Fontane Effi Briest, Chinese Roulette and World on a Wire are also going to be shown at this year’s 赌博app. It is reported that other series of Tribute to Masters will also be revealed soon.
