“Chinese mainland actors Wang Jingchun and Liao Fan, both of whom graduated from Shanghai Theatre Academy, will set up an art film center in town,” officials said yesterday at the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival.
The center will screen outstanding art-house films by young talented film makers and offer film salons and workshops for directors to talk with art film fans.
“We will also organize art film exhibitions on campus,” said Wang, who won Best Actor at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival. “Theater screens are still replete with commercial productions. Liao and I hope that the center will help young film buffs to know more about the charm and value of art-house films.”
Liao won the award for Best Actor at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
Lou Wei, an official from Shanghai Theatre Academy, said that they have also launched a series of events to nurture and discover new talents for art films. The events include micro film competition and international case studies.
According to Hu Jinjun, director of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV, the local government will also provide support service for the center, such as hosting art film exhibitions at public venues like the China Art Museum, Power Station of Art and Shanghai Museum.
Film producer and entrepreneur Shi Jianxiang, who is now producing the third installment of Ip Man 3 and the war epic film The Bombing, also announced a film charity program at the festival.
The program includes funding the education of young Chinese film makers, honoring celebrated Chinese film artists and hosting an international micro film contest.
Shi also invited the 90-year-old composer Huang Zhun, a music director celebrated for many Chinese films, to write scores for new productions.
