South Korean film The Target, vying for the Golden Goblet award at the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival, received hails of applause from the audience at a screening yesterday.
The action thriller, directed by Yoon Hong-seung, concerns the unexpected experiences shared by a doctor and a man who used to be a professional killer. As they become involved in conspiracy and a murder case, they can only survive using their wisdom and courage.
The film had its premiere screening last month in South Korea and its box office success exceeded the popularity of Hollywood blockbusters being exhibited during the same period.
Director Yoon said the film was inspired by the French production Point Blank but he included many distinctive South Korean elements to present an Oriental style of cinematography.
Yoon also mentioned his connection with the Shanghai International Film Festival at yesterday\'s press conference.
"Five years ago I attended the film fest as an audience member," he said. "I am honored and pleased that this time I will participate in the competition for the coveted Golden Goblet award with my latest production."
